The peculiarity of the Amphorae Museum of San Benedetto del Tronto is to gather a series of amphorae dating back to different historical periods.
They have been found throughout the Mediterranean Sea entangled by the nets of motor fishing boats belonging to the San Benedetto del Tronto Fleet, which during the 1950’s and 60’s have practised trawling in different areas, from the Aegean to the Ionian Sea, from the Tyrrhenian to the Sea of Sicily and, of course, in the Adriatic Sea.
These amphorae came to be part of the collection of Dr. Giovanni Perotti, who donated them to the Municipality in 1988.
They have been passed down to us to tell the extraordinary stories about the Mediterranean Sea and its ancient civilizations.
The collection is unique in Italy as it gathers undersea findings from different ages and civilizations (Canaanite, Phoenician, Punic, Greek, Roman, Byzantine amphorae, etc.).
The Amphorae Museum has been established for both scientific and information purposes. The various aspects of the exhibition (businesses, products, amphorae, underwater research, naval architecture….) are illustrated on panels written with an essential clear language and with synthetic descriptions of the exposed findings.
The Amphorae Museum represents the first step to the future Sea Museum, a single complex that will house also artefacts from the Antiquarium Truentinum and from the Museum of Fisheries and Marine Civilization, connected on a cultural and logistical level to the Fish and Paleontological Museum hosted in the rooms of the neighbouring Fish Market. The purpose is to unify in a single museum such a rich and diversified cultural heritage presently housed in different Museums.
